Seymour C. Hollingsworth was born in Westmoreland County, PA, east of Pittsburgh.  He was most likely born, in 1841, though some accounts indicate he may have been born in 1842.  As a young man, he worked as a shoemaker.  In late 1861, Hollingsworth enlisted in Pennsylvania 11th Regiment, Company K.  This regiment became known as  “The Bloody 11th” due to its actions in some of the Civil War’s most influential battles.
